Dog Photographer Erin Vey bio picture

Meet Erin Vey

I am a dog lover first.

A photographer second.

By some random chance of fate, I was able to combine the two loves into the coolest job ever: A Dog Photographer

I grew up in a family where dogs were always an integral part of our lives and most importantly, members of the family. Most of my childhood was spent with various Basset Hounds of the lovable but extremely stubborn variety. We never had less than 2 at any given time, sometimes 3, and the occasional stray that one of us would bring home for a visit.

After a short stint doing portrait work, which I still love, I realized my true calling is capturing the essence and personality of dogs. Upon reflection, I feel that my time doing portrait work was not wasted. Because of it, my experience with portrait work flows beautifully into working with people and their dogs.

My husband and I are owned by the fabulous Miss Gracie, a 5 year old Great Dane who brings energy and life into our house. You’ll see her around here a lot, she loves having her portrait taken (at least I like to think so).  She is a complete Diva and if you stick around long enough, you'll know what I'm talking about!

What an amazing adventure this has been so far. I’m so glad you are here experiencing it with me.

Oh Look … A Blog Post!

Hi Friends.

I know its been awhile since I have done a blog post.

I wish I had a better explanation as to why, but quite simply, I haven’t felt like picking up my camera in ages. Maybe it is just because it is winter. I hope so. I decided not to put any pressure on myself and just work through it.

Even today I didn’t feel like picking up my camera but I forced myself to get it out and do just a few shots of Gracie girl. I love her so much.

I hope to find my motivation here soon! I think I’m on my way.

The 35 1.4 still hasn’t come off my camera since getting here. We are BFF’s!

Yawny McYawnerson.

Kim @ Petals and Paws Photography - im a DORK. I thought this was your website - because I went straight for the picts and didn't read a thing! So, now I know. I am IN your blog right now, not your website! Just wanted to clarify that I am fully aware im a dork. Namaste' Kimberly Petals and Paws Photography Pismo Beach, CA

Kim @ Petals and Paws Photography - um - my new hero. Erin you are my new favorite pet photog. (next to me and Pioneer Woman! :) Your eye is SPOT on. Your perception of each shot is spectacular. Gracie is so dang loveable - I can't understand why there isn't 5 million and 1 reasons. You are the reason why I strive to do better each shoot. I am going to buy Skyes workbook, and I am hoping it will help fine tune my shots. I can't wait to get it. AND The contracts/forms as well. Those are imperative! Again, you made my heart happy right now. Amazing. I hope you have a blog - if so, im going to be all over it! all my love, kim (feel free and comment on any of my images that you wish to. It would mean alot to get any kind of feedback, I would graciously accept! All my kitten, mittens, and paws love - to you and yours. Kimberly!

judy - my first Gracie meeting I am in love - lucky you

Deborah Carr - How could anyone NOT love Gracie? What a girl. Talk about eyes of love. I'm a dog-junkie. They are such HAMS, aren't they?

kristi - love seeing Gracie, but have to say....I am right there with you on not wanting to pick up the camera. It will pass soon, I hope! She is so adorable.....what a face

oneshotbeyond - I miss your posts when you're away. Hope that inspires you! ;-) Gracie is still as gorgeous as ever.

Sue, Vancouver, BC, Canada - OMG these are precious!!!! The second one with her head in your hand is adorable...my dog would NEVER sit still long enough for that! :-( Welcome back...we have missed you and Gracie (and her tweets too)

Jen - hooray! Thanks for making my day. She's just as cute as I remember her. Great shots!!

Rachel - Her eyes are killer. What a beautiful dog. Great to see some new content from you.

Shauna (Fido & Wino blog) - Sending you some sunshine vibes & warmth to help you get over the winter blahs! Yeah, crappy winters pretty much suck ;)

Susan - I'd say you made a smashing entrance after a little time off-great shots! Know what you mean about photog's block...I've been battling it myself lately and been posting from the archives for the most part as of late.I think the season definitely has a lot to do with it. The 35 f/1.4 was my favorite Canon lens when I had my 5D Mark ll-great combo!

jane button - Welcome back! You were missed - I'm glad I'm not the only one in a camera funk lately - I think it's the lack of sunshine :) I did my first pet portrait session last weekend with an 11 yr old Golden named Hickory...it was fun!

Michelle - You are most definitely worth the wait!

Maribeth - Nothing is worse than Chicago winters!! yik! I am ready for spring!

Maribeth - We realize you not wanting to pick up your camera has NO relfection on your love for Gracie! We missed her and you!!!

Christine Pobke - OMG. gracie is soooo cute. and so glad to hear you are loving your 35!!! PS love love love that last shot - how creative are you??!! goodness gracious.

MAYBELLINE - Ditto. Seems like it's going around. The shot with the hand holding up her chin is darling.

Angie - I hear you - I've been struggling with this as well. Shorter days, less sunlight I think is part of it for me - maybe it is for you too? Nevertheless, Gracie girl looks wonderful - as always!

lexi - I love looking at pictures that photographers have taken of their own 'pets' there is more of a personal touch to them.

Maria - And I didn't even have to wait until Monday. I knew you'd post again. Just because it becomes a little less constant once in a while, doesn't mean it's not still in your blood. I think it's a lot like "writer's block".

amberly - I love the new additions of Gracie. Glad you posted! I feel the same way you do... I feel it's the winter also that's been keeping me from shooting... but when I do, I feel so good! haha The first pic of her looks almost like a Dachshund! And the bottom one reminds me of a giraffe reaching for those top branches.. :) This prime lens you've gotten sure is nice! I just got a 50 1.4 and I rarely take it off... I'll have to look into the 35 bc I never seem to have enough "space" in the 50mm frame... :> keep up the good work! love it!

Leora Shiff - Definitely missed reading your blog!!! Love the pictures of Gracie!!

Victoria - I love the "hand smushing" one :)

Laurie Luck, KPA-CTP - Y'know it just doesn't get any better than Miss Gracie. It wouldn't pay your bills, but I could go the rest of my life with *just* Miss Gracie pictures and die a happy, happy woman. (Well, unless that is, you decided to come east and photograph Talos before he has to go back to the service dog agency. It's a matter of months now...). :(

Cj - Those eyes... Wow! those teeth!

andrea - Good to see Miss Gracie again! We've missed that face :)

Ruth - Welcome back :)
