Dog Photographer Erin Vey bio picture

Meet Erin Vey

I am a dog lover first.

A photographer second.

By some random chance of fate, I was able to combine the two loves into the coolest job ever: A Dog Photographer

I grew up in a family where dogs were always an integral part of our lives and most importantly, members of the family. Most of my childhood was spent with various Basset Hounds of the lovable but extremely stubborn variety. We never had less than 2 at any given time, sometimes 3, and the occasional stray that one of us would bring home for a visit.

After a short stint doing portrait work, which I still love, I realized my true calling is capturing the essence and personality of dogs. Upon reflection, I feel that my time doing portrait work was not wasted. Because of it, my experience with portrait work flows beautifully into working with people and their dogs.

My husband and I are owned by the fabulous Miss Gracie, a 5 year old Great Dane who brings energy and life into our house. You’ll see her around here a lot, she loves having her portrait taken (at least I like to think so).  She is a complete Diva and if you stick around long enough, you'll know what I'm talking about!

What an amazing adventure this has been so far. I’m so glad you are here experiencing it with me.

Play Time in Black + White

Since we always had at least 2 dogs in our family, my childhood memories are filled with the sounds of dogs playing. Most of the time my sister and I would jump right in and play with them. I think our favorite one was Hot Lava where the dogs were the monsters in the lava and we jumped from couch to couch to avoid them. Since we owned Basset Hounds (with little flipper legs), it was quite easy to avoid them. I don’t think Hot Lava would work with a Great Dane!

So when I see dogs playing, it just makes me smile. They have a complete disregard for any valuables that might be around. They don’t care who is watching. They just live + play in the moment. Dogs are always teaching us good life lessons :)

I got to sit back and watch Stella + Abby play. Good times!

SAFE!

Deborah Gugeri - Just wanted to say 'what beautiful photographs"...I have always had at least two dogs as well to share my life so understand your love for them. We always photograph best the things we love the most....shows. Mine are a border collie and a hmmm...Jack Russell(sort of).

Emily - Erin, What type of dog is the "fuzzy" one? She darling!!!! Any Chicago trips planned? We will be headed there in June with Miss Wrigley!

Karla - What a great series, Erin. I especially like the last one (Safe). I always have a hard time loading your images. It takes forever, usually after I have had to press reload several times. Has anyone else mentioned this to you? Love your work! Karla

Karrie Baker - I so needed this post today. Totally made me giggle. Love it!!

Joanna@amtecregistrar.com - Erin - I LOVE this series. Can you tell me what breed the dog is that is leaning in the chair? I am recently in love with those dogs - is it a Goldipoo or a Labradoodle? Please advise, as my next dog will be that kind!! I love how she's leaning, LOL!

Nicole - and here I thought I was an original child with the hot lava... 'fraid not huh?! Except with no dogs until I was past the lava stage, the red in the oriental carpet was the lava. Sad.

shannon - yes! i remember Hot Lava! Reggie was the best at that game (sigh, the best Bassett EVER!)

Kim - My boys are constantly playing HOT LAVA, lmao! love, no swoon over your work.
