Dog Photographer Erin Vey bio picture

Meet Erin Vey

I am a dog lover first.

A photographer second.

By some random chance of fate, I was able to combine the two loves into the coolest job ever: A Dog Photographer

I grew up in a family where dogs were always an integral part of our lives and most importantly, members of the family. Most of my childhood was spent with various Basset Hounds of the lovable but extremely stubborn variety. We never had less than 2 at any given time, sometimes 3, and the occasional stray that one of us would bring home for a visit.

After a short stint doing portrait work, which I still love, I realized my true calling is capturing the essence and personality of dogs. Upon reflection, I feel that my time doing portrait work was not wasted. Because of it, my experience with portrait work flows beautifully into working with people and their dogs.

My husband and I are owned by the fabulous Miss Gracie, a 5 year old Great Dane who brings energy and life into our house. You’ll see her around here a lot, she loves having her portrait taken (at least I like to think so).  She is a complete Diva and if you stick around long enough, you'll know what I'm talking about!

What an amazing adventure this has been so far. I’m so glad you are here experiencing it with me.

Marley + Me

Marley + Me Contest.

I couldn’t read the book. I couldn’t watch the movie. I won’t watch The Discovery Channel when Killer Whales are on because I just know that they are going to eat a seal mid-jump.

I couldn’t even watch the segment in Keeping Up With The Kardashians when Khloe was at the PETA office and they were showing her video realities of the fur industry. UGH!

But that doesn’t mean I can’t give away 2 copies so that someone else can enjoy the movie!

I want to see pictures this time, so email me (1) picture of your Marley (or Marley’s) by Tuesday 4/7 at 5pm PST.

Audrey - I can soooo relate. Everyone says that Marley and Me is so so good but I can't watch it. I make my husband change the channel if animal planet is showing a cheetah or lion about to chase. I can't watch Animal Cops or anything. I know it happens, but I just can't stand seeing it.

Marbeth - I really enjoy your site, I love all animals, but especially dogs! I have a cocker spaniel..would love to have you take some pics of hi...mmmm..my brother lives in Portland...mmm. (road trip? I am in chicago!) You really capture the spirit of your subjects and then some!!. I don't see any cockers in your archives, but to me they have the cutest faces. You're very talented and so lucky to make a living photographing and meeting all these precious dogs! lucky, lucky you! You can't help but smile looking at your pics! Love em! Thanks for sharing!

Meredith Perdue - Such a fun contest, Erin! I cannot wait to see the images you receive :)

Anonymous - I read the book twice and saw the movie. I loved the book and hated the movie. At the time I read the book it helped me to morn the death of one of my pets. The movie seem to be more about the actors than anything else. The actors did not represent or portray the characters in the novel. The best part of the movie was the dog. I did see the segment on Keeping up with the Kardashians and wish I had not heard what I did. Though it has made me wiser to the horrors of the fur industry. Nice of you for what you are doing with the contest, for those that may love the movie.

Emilee - I haven't read the book or seen the movie yet, but it's not because I don't want to! I really want to see it and I know I will sob, sob, SOB! I cry everytime I watch animal movies like Old Yeller, Homeward Bound, My Dog Skip, and many more. You're not alone! I can handle most of the Discovery channel stuff, but if a baby is killed or separated from its mother, or if it is a touching show about a family pet I can barely keep from crying.

Dodie - I had eyelid surgery last week, so I can't watch the movie until the stitches come out. Can't get 'em wet! I am going to focus (no pun intended - LOL) on the funny parts of the movie. But I did cry when I listened to the book on tape, so I know that the tears will flow on this as well.

Jill - I'm so the same way. I can't watch any movie or read anything if an animal gets hurt. I prepared myself to watch Marley and Me though. I loved it and still cried so much in the theatre.

kristie kulik - lol- you are definitely not alone. I have the book....and have stared at it for over a year now. I just can't bring myself to do it. I attempted to watch the Dicovery channel special Planet Earth...and promptly walked away crying lol!

Jenn Hopkins - I'd enter a ton of my "Marley", because man was she a bad puppy, but I cant bear to watch the movie either! I started the book and stopped it immediatley...I also thought I was the only one who watched (well, covered my eyes) the Khloe Kardashian episode!

Erin - I LOVE that I'm not the only one who refused to read the book, see the movie or watch ANYTHING in which an animal MIGHT get hurt or be uncomfortable in any way! I'm with you sister! :)

andrea - I had no intentions of going to see that movie, even though i wanted to.but then i got invited to go see it....so i did. I CRIED LIKE A BABY!!!!

Jennie Sloan - We just bought and watched Marley and Me yesterday. It was such a great book, and a really good movie. I watched the whole thing (crying like a baby)... My fiance couldn't. Those who have seen it will know why.

Mandy - I don't have any Marley's! My kids can do damage like that though. :)

Teri - I only read the book after lots of prompting by others. I can't see the movie...........to heart wrenching.
