Dog Photographer Erin Vey bio picture

Meet Erin Vey

I am a dog lover first.

A photographer second.

By some random chance of fate, I was able to combine the two loves into the coolest job ever: A Dog Photographer

I grew up in a family where dogs were always an integral part of our lives and most importantly, members of the family. Most of my childhood was spent with various Basset Hounds of the lovable but extremely stubborn variety. We never had less than 2 at any given time, sometimes 3, and the occasional stray that one of us would bring home for a visit.

After a short stint doing portrait work, which I still love, I realized my true calling is capturing the essence and personality of dogs. Upon reflection, I feel that my time doing portrait work was not wasted. Because of it, my experience with portrait work flows beautifully into working with people and their dogs.

My husband and I are owned by the fabulous Miss Gracie, a 5 year old Great Dane who brings energy and life into our house. You’ll see her around here a lot, she loves having her portrait taken (at least I like to think so).  She is a complete Diva and if you stick around long enough, you'll know what I'm talking about!

What an amazing adventure this has been so far. I’m so glad you are here experiencing it with me.

The Walking Zipper

The word bloat is every Great Dane owners worst fear. It is like a little black cloud that follows you wherever you go.

Friday night, while we were still in Mexico, Gracie bloated. Thankfully I had educated my Mom on it and she caught it in time. Within 30 minutes she was at our emergency animal hospital having major surgery. If my Mom hadn’t gotten her there so quickly it would have been deadly. Grammy gets a major award for saving our girl.

Her stomach twisted a full 180 degrees but no tissue was damaged, which we are very thankful for. They tacked her stomach to the wall lining permanently so this should hopefully not happen again. She has an incision from her chest to the bottom of her tummy and is already making us laugh because she is being so funny on her pain pills.

She recovered so quickly that she got to come home within 24 hours of surgery. Most dogs have to stay at the hospital for a few days. She is eating her rice and chicken like a champ and sleeping a lot.

It will probably take me a few days to get caught up and back on track. We went straight from Mexico, to the airport, to the hospital to pick her up. We were then up every hour to make sure she wasn’t licking her IV wounds or the incision. On top of all that I came home with a nasty sinus infection.

You can leave Gracie a little message in the comment box and I’ll be sure to pass the love on to her.

Sweet Girl resting comfortably.

An-Magritt Lerfald - Hi! I feel so sorry for her. I don`t know what bloat is and don`t understand the word. But It looked like a big surgery. Our first dog, a German Vorsteh once ate a rubber ball. He had to have a surgery to get the ball out of the stomach, because it was to big to be come out either direction. It was a big surgery, but he was as lively as before almost the second day. The problem was to keep such a big lively dog calm. I hope Gracie will recover well. Big hugs from a dog lover in Norway ;D (Minnelita)

Danielle H. - Get better Gracie! Hugs to you!

amy boring - Oh no Gracie. Shryner and I are so glad that you are ok. So Scary. Sending you sweet puppy kisses girl. Get well soon sweet girl. THANK GOODNESS Erin!

Cortney - Oh poor Gracie! I hope you're feeling better soon. And scars add character, don't let anyone tell you different! Our Swissy Greta had the tack surgery with her spay as Swissie's are prone to bloat as well - you can't even tell where her scar is now. Enjoy your pain meds and keep entertaining your parents! Allison (Dog Mom) - Aaw, Gracie! We are soooo glad that you have an educated momma who knew what to look for! We hope you're on the mend soon...and keep your paws off of the stitches! Have your mommee give you some ice cream. It makes you heal faster. Wuv, Gus the Golden and Waldo the Great Dane

Carson - Goodness gracious, Gracie! And I thought only horses suffered from such gastrointestinal maladies. Who knew? Leave it to your mom to turn stomach sutures into art. You're still beautiful and we're all wishing you a speedy recovery.

Jenny - oh my gosh, not what I expected when I came to your page today! Get better soon, Gracie!! Thank god your mom was such a good Gracie-sitter and recognized what was going on!

Nestra - Gracie - your life will probably never be better than it will be for the next few weeks. Anything you do bad just blame on the pain meds! Take advantage of how bad your Momma and Daddy feel that you were sick - lots of extra cuddles for you.

Amy - Lots of love from Amsterdam sweet Gracie girl! So glad your gram took such good care of you. Feel better!

lou h - Poor girly! Poor you, too, finishing your vacation with that stress. Our Airedale has just had her stitches out after being spayed. The horrible rosy bruise has gone and the bare belly is getting some stubble, but her shaven front leg looks like she's part Poodle, part Airedale. Get well soon, Gracie. And well done Mom for getting her to help on time.

Kari - Grammy deserves a medal! Poor Gracie- give her a big smooch from me and my family, we have watched Gracie on your Flickr stream for ages, and hope she is back to hogging the couch and making wonderful faces for us to enjoy again very, very soon.

lauren clark - oh my! I'm so glad your mom caught it! I am so worried about this happening to one of mine:(

Ashley McNamara - I am so glad she is ok.

Susan Dodd - Wow, Erin...huge news...and very scary stuff. I'm so glad she made it through. Big kudos to your mom. I'm sure you are all exhausted, physically and emotionally. Sending good thoughts. <3

Grammy - Just so everyone is aware, we learned from the wonderful vets at Seattle Veterinary Specialists (SVS) in Kirkland that gastroplexy can be done at the same time a dog is spayed so that this very scary situation is no longer an issue. We are ever so grateful that Gracie is doing so well. She is a very loved doggy and an important member of our extended family! Grammy loves you Gracers.

Jane - Oh sweet baby girl...I'm so glad she's OK. Thank goodness your Mom knew the signs and help was close by! Get better soon Miss Gracie!

Deann B. - Poor Gracie! Hope you're feeling 100% soon!

carrie - Poor baby. I am so glad she is doing well and on the mend. Bless you mom!

Angie - Poor baby girl! Her Grammy was very smart indeed to have caught it so quickly - gold-plated Mother's Day gifts are in order this year. Merry and I wish Gracie a speedy and pain-free recovery.

Annie - Gracie, you are one blessed pup to have a grammy who loves you so much! At least you are eating, that is a very good sign!

heather - Oh how scary! I am glad Gracie is doing OK. Please give her a scritch behind those ears for me. Big props to your mom.

Guinness Hobson - I am thinking about you lots, Gracie! I am sorry this happened to you. Now we have twin scars on our bellies. Lots of hugs and licks. G.

erika verginelli - poor her! I really hope she recovers soon ;-)

Dennis - Aw Gracie we are praying for you girl!

marie - thank God you caught it in time. Get well soon Gracie.. hugs

Holly - Bloat is a scary scary thing. Thanks to all the dog gods that you mom recognized what it was and that she was awake to get Gracie to the vet. Give Gracie a scritch and tell her the W Congress crew are sending their best.

Stephanie - I literally started to cry when I read "Gracie bloated" that is my biggest fear when we adopt out great dane pup in a few months. I'm pretty sure my husband and I want to get the surgery done that Gracie had (gastroplexy) just for an extra precaution. Please give Gracie all the hugs and kisses you can from my husband and I. We will keep her in our thoughts for a speedy recovery. Hugs and treats for Gracie. Stephanie and Duggie

Jamie - Gracie, you have street cred now. "You should see what the other guy looked like." You're still the prettiest princess on the whole blog. Mia and Lotto send kisses.

Patsy - Get well Gracie Girl! Thank goodness for Grandmas!

PShorten - Erin, Our dog, Libby, had to have her knee replaced a few years ago and nothing looked funnier than her shaved bare hiney! The hair grew back a lot slower than I expected, felt like it took forever. Anyhow, give Gracie a big hug for me. I so enjoy your photos of her and the inspiration it sends my way. Pat

Mrs. Smith - Oh no, poor puppy! There is just something about animals and medical stuff that makes them seem so vulnerable. I constantly worry about my dog for no reason! It's just because I am so full of love for him. :) Please give Gracie a hug, kiss and pat for me!

Pammy - I am so sorry. No one wants to have to come home to a poor sick baby. Glad your mom had the foresight to intervene and help.

Jen Kohler - OH NO! so sorry to hear this but so glad she is doing well!! Wishing you a speedy recovery Gracie! Jen & Dylan
