Dog Photographer Erin Vey bio picture

Meet Erin Vey

I am a dog lover first.

A photographer second.

By some random chance of fate, I was able to combine the two loves into the coolest job ever: A Dog Photographer

I grew up in a family where dogs were always an integral part of our lives and most importantly, members of the family. Most of my childhood was spent with various Basset Hounds of the lovable but extremely stubborn variety. We never had less than 2 at any given time, sometimes 3, and the occasional stray that one of us would bring home for a visit.

After a short stint doing portrait work, which I still love, I realized my true calling is capturing the essence and personality of dogs. Upon reflection, I feel that my time doing portrait work was not wasted. Because of it, my experience with portrait work flows beautifully into working with people and their dogs.

My husband and I are owned by the fabulous Miss Gracie, a 5 year old Great Dane who brings energy and life into our house. You’ll see her around here a lot, she loves having her portrait taken (at least I like to think so).  She is a complete Diva and if you stick around long enough, you'll know what I'm talking about!

What an amazing adventure this has been so far. I’m so glad you are here experiencing it with me.

Travel Plans

I just booked my travel to Las Vegas for mid February (15 – 17). This will be my first time at WPPI and I’m excited to meet so many people that I have gotten to know online over the years. If you know my face and see me there, don’t be shy … come say hello!

Also, I am only going to be there for a few days but I thought I would just put it out there that I would love, love, love to do a shoot on the strip with a dog (and owner). Anything goes in Vegas and I have a ton of ideas swirling around in this crazy head of mine. I’m sure it is a long shot but PLEASE contact me if you and your dog are going to be in Vegas on any of those days.

I’ll be hitting Cabo San Lucas at the end of February which is good because I am seriously vitamin D deficient, along with the rest of the Pacific Northwest. I’m hoping to shoot while I am down there but it might be hard with a beer permanently fixed in one hand and my camera in another. No hands left for treats!

See you in 2009!

Sarah Bussey - Erin, I am going to WPPI this year too. My first time as well. I hope to meet you while I am there and if you get a shoot together I for sure want to some along. I have a friend out there and I am going to email him right now to see if he knows of anyone that would be up for a photo shoot with their dog.

Lina - I am so coming back here again. I LOVE your pics... Amazing! :)

lesli streets - erin, i have an 11 year old weimeraner named contessa blue and she would love to be the subject of any of your photos! i have been admiring your work ever since my photography teacher pointed out to me what you are able to capture with dogs. i love miss gracie and her ears! i would love to hear your ideas for photo shoots in vegas with a dog. especially on the strip. my aunt (my grandmother's sister) is the one who designed the welcome to las vegas sign and i would love love love to have a photo there and then go get her to sign it for me. actually if you take one of the sign for yourself i am sure she would sign it for you too and i would happily take it to her to do that for you and ship it back to ya. hehe. wanna bring miss g along to vegas? hehe. the boneyard here (the graveyard for the old hotel signs) is another fun place. but you probably already knew of it.?. anyway. she and i are up for being in those crazy ideas you have rolling around in your head! cheers. lesli

Rob Vreeland - I've been thinking of heading to WPPI as well. Never been there and have always wanted to go. I'm a little bummed some of the classes that I want are already sold out. That might make me wait until next year. If I do go, I'll just listen for the giant pack of dogs and head that way.

Kim Hayes - awesome! i'm thinking about the wppi as well... to go or not to go? it sounds like a blast! happy new year!

Melissa Corcoran - Erin, I have to say... you are just amazing! I love watching your flickr stream and the adventures of Miss Gracie. The way you have followed your heart and are doing what makes you happy is an inspiration to us all. I'm just north of Seattle and can completely relate to the Vitamin D deficiency! Enjoy Cabo. Oh, I think visiting the shelter would be such a fabulous idea... although, I can hardly visit our local one without bringing home a new baby. :) Happy New Year and keep up the inspiring work!

karlene - I LOVE your pictures. Thank you for sharing them. Happy New Year!

Marshall and Mollie - Hi Erin, We would love to volunteer ourselves and dogs, Nyah and Ko, for a photo shoot on the strip. It sounds like a blast!! Our pups are Vizslas, our boy is 9 months and our girl is 3 1/2 years. They are both sweeties and beautiful, but of course we are a little biased :)! There are lots of photos of them both on our website. Marshall and Mollie

SusanneB - Hi Erin, I too am going to be at WPPI this Feb for the first time and really looking forward to it. Of all the Photog blogs I look at - I always go to yours first so I can get my fix of your amazing dog photography and of course your own beautiful dog - how wonderful to have her to photograph whenever you want to.

TammyB - Hey Erin, Enjoy Cabo, I was married there a year ago, this past June. You should visit the Cabo dog Shelter and take some pictures, the poeple who run that place are so nice. We ended up taking 3 dogs back to the states when our honeymoon was over.
