Dog Photographer Erin Vey bio picture

Meet Erin Vey

I am a dog lover first.

A photographer second.

By some random chance of fate, I was able to combine the two loves into the coolest job ever: A Dog Photographer

I grew up in a family where dogs were always an integral part of our lives and most importantly, members of the family. Most of my childhood was spent with various Basset Hounds of the lovable but extremely stubborn variety. We never had less than 2 at any given time, sometimes 3, and the occasional stray that one of us would bring home for a visit.

After a short stint doing portrait work, which I still love, I realized my true calling is capturing the essence and personality of dogs. Upon reflection, I feel that my time doing portrait work was not wasted. Because of it, my experience with portrait work flows beautifully into working with people and their dogs.

My husband and I are owned by the fabulous Miss Gracie, a 5 year old Great Dane who brings energy and life into our house. You’ll see her around here a lot, she loves having her portrait taken (at least I like to think so).  She is a complete Diva and if you stick around long enough, you'll know what I'm talking about!

What an amazing adventure this has been so far. I’m so glad you are here experiencing it with me.

The Best of 2008

I don’t think any words can appropriately express the kind of year I have had. I have tried a few times but the words just don’t seem to fit.

2008 was the year that I completely disregarded what was logical and followed my heart. What you see and experience through my blog and in my work is my heart. It isn’t about the settings, the camera, the lens, and the background (to name a few)…it is about listening to my own heart and following its direction.

Whether you are a photographer, dog lover, or a simple reader, I hope you follow your own heart and find your bliss in 2009.

I mentioned earlier that I was making a book of the Best of 2008 and I decided to share it with you as we close out 2008. I am finalizing the book this week for print and can’t wait to see it on our coffee table as a reminder of the amazing dogs + owners I have met. Miss Gracie is absent from this collection of images (except for 1) as she is getting her own book (and she wouldn’t have it any other way).

It has been such an incredible year and I’m so thankful to have you lovely readers to share it with.

After you have watched the slideshow come back and tell me what your favorite image was for 2008!

[ THE BEST OF 2008 SLIDESHOW ]

Shanee - Erin- Just happened upon your site and thank the Lord I did!!! I absolutely love the way you captured the moment with all of your photos! Each photo touched my heart - I love all of them, but the Golden Retriever ones are SO special!!! I love your memory section, too. How great of you to do that! This just made my day!!!!!!!!!!!!!Keep up your good work! Thanks for sharing these photos with the rest of us!!!

Zo Hummel - Hey Erin, I turn 40 this Friday and I am so happy that I came upon this particular post in your blog (every time I think this is the last page, I click on Older Posts). Great words...thanks. And great slide show. You've been an inspiration for two years on Flickr. --Zo- a.k.a. zo_irish and { zh photo }

Donna - I am totally blown away.....sitting her crying like a baby, with my own "furbaby" by my side. What artistry and heart you capture with your pictures. Since you like to travel, if you're ever in the Philly area....my pup & I would be happy to show you around!!

Great Dane Addict - Hard to type. Crying too hard. Your pictures ALWAYS move me to tears, but then you had to throw in that In Memory of, and I lost it.

Lauren - Absolutely beautiful photos, Erin, your slideshow is just gorgeous. Your book will be beautiful too, you should sell it.

Kim Hayes - seriously erin, i'm blown away. you took so many amazing photographs of some many adorable pups! i'm glad that you followed your heart and starting doing what you were obviously meant to do!

Jean - My face is damp from such a moving tribute to dogs and their humans - what a wonderful, wonderful way to start the new year. I am so glad you followed your heart in 2008, because in doing so you have captured something very, very special. Erin, may 2009 be full of wonderful days, incredible dogs, and many, many more of the great moments you have captured here. Jean. PS - it is hard to choose one favourite, for many take my breath away. But if I had to choose one, I would say it is still the white dog and red dress on the centre line. That is the shot that first drew me to your blog, and it still shocks me into a moment of silence (in a very pleasant and relaxing way) each time I see it.

jennifer - loved the slideshow! your pictures are beautiful! i also teared up during the memorial section as i remembered each of their stories. really nicely done. erin, what was the name of the songs you chose? thanks again for all you do...your work always puts a smile on my face.

Leah - Erin, thank you for all of your wonderful work! They are beautiful to look at as well as inspiring to a young photographer such as myself. I had forgotten about this place during the mad rush of starting school, but I'm so glad I've rediscovered it. It always puts me in a good mood to look at your photos. Keep up the amazing work- Leah K

Emilee - Oh, Erin, this is beautiful. Your work is pure art, so amazing. So inspiring. I got all teared up when it got the Memorial section. Beautiful. I just don't have words for this! :)

Georgia - I love all of the bulldog shots. How can you not love those faces?

Linda@Lime in the Coconut - STUNNING! and stirring and soulful and such love and loyalty in the eyes. You are amazing at capturing the moment, the personality in each dog and owner. Your work is fantastic. No way to pick a fave...like picking a fave kid. No way, no how. Keep it up beautifully in 2009...and if you ever want a cottage to stay in in FL...near the beach...we've got a couple of dogs that would love to have ya!

Haley - Beautiful doesn't begin to describe it! Now, if I'd known it was going to make me cry, I would have parked the Kleenex a bit closer to my computer- it's such loving work you do.

~Kristina - WOW. Beautiful collection. My favs have to be the am bull with the red dress, peanut, and the entire memorial section. My 4 yr old son who frequently views your blog with me adores the choc lab pup with the red collar. If only you could hear how he giggles ...

april - Wow. Absolutely stunning. I have no words for the way you're able to capture dogs, and their owners. It's incredible. The In Memory section made me cry at my desk. How could I ever choose a favorite?

Lori - Incredible Erin! I've been following your blog now for about a year and can remember most of those shots! Hard to pick a favorite but off the cuff the girl wringing out the tail and the dog kissing its owner sitting against the wall stand out! What a heartfelt moment at the end! Much success to you in 2009!

li - beautiful work, i love everything you do. all of them are my favorites. happy new year!!

Michelle D - Hi, Erin. I'm so glad I found your blog in 2008! I check it at least daily and just love it. My nine year old son and I just watched your slideshow, and although it is almost impossible to narrow down a favorite....he chose the little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I loved them all...but when I saw that little baby brown lab with the ball pop up, I think it became my favorite. I don't remember seeing that one on your blog. Thanks for sharing all of these amazing photos..and also for answering my emails!

Maria - Erin, They are all great in their own ways. You can see the animal's personality in so many of your photos. My personal fave however is the golden doodle. Perfect light, texture of him and his blankie...just perfect shots. Happy New Year!

Gabrielle Plasse - wow, absolutly amazing.

Laura - Your photos are truly amazing, and never cease to amaze me. Your love of animals comes through as well.

Sarah - Erin...you are simply amazing! Your passion for animals truly shows in each of your images. My fave is definitely the little girl wringing the dogs tale...such a beautiful image. Thanks for sharing. I hope you are richly blessed in 2009!

Jane & Nelson - Fabulous slide show! I love all the pictures and like the rest of your admirers, I totally lost it at the end. Thank you for your contribution to my life in 2008. Your work with Nelson is priceless and he is very proud that he made the cut. XO

Catherine Clay - Erin - you are so absurdly talented! I love seeing your work in a book format! It is all stunning, but the in memory of section drew the tears out of me! I can't wait to see what you produce in 2009. Thank you for inspiring us all!

Karrie Baker - Beautiful, absolutely & completely BEAUTIFUL!!!

Angela - Words fail me at the moment - that was beautiful and I wish I could see it in actual print. I can see how knowing each and everyone of these fur kids has enriched your life - what a glorious way to see out the year. Thanks for sharing Erin :)

Amy - I just bawled my head off at the end. It was kind of like at the Academy Awards when they have the slide show of all the actors that have passed away that year. Thanks for sharing all of your stars for 2008!

Carmel - Wow, love the slideshow, the ending tribute brought me in tears. It's always a treasure to capture every essence of a pet. I LOVE every single images you took. You've inspired me in every way and want to capture the best of my four pets. Looking forward what lies ahead for you in 2009. Hopefully someday, you'll travel to Indiana and we'll LOVE to have you shoot our pets along with us in it. Someday... Happy New Year

lou h - Truly remarkable work. My photographer self is always in admiration of the technical quality of your shots & immaculate post-production. And of course, my total self is in awe of how you create a perfect distillation of every character you photograph. The girl wringing the dog's tail in the water, the pug on the orange sofa whose feet smile like his face, the way you select an ear, a smile, a look. Fanstastic.

sarah - Because you are so AMAZING, it is terribly difficult to pick just one favorite. You are such an inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing with us your photog genius self! I look forward to your posts each and every day. A very happy new year to you!

Stef - Erin, Beautiful...soulful...funny...tender...playful... so much is conveyed in your photographs. I'm another who couldn't pick a favorite. Your work inspires me to strive to be a better photographer. Thank you. The in loving memory section brought me to tears. (thankfully not many people are in the office today to see the water works) we lost our beloved Rosie in July and I'm amazed how the sorrow still jumps at me out of nowhere. Best of luck to you and all your pups in the New Year.

jennifer kitrosser - Wow! This tugged at my heart for sure! As I watched the slide show I remembered each of these shoots that you were so kind enough to shared with us. Thank you for that! And yes, what an incredible year you've had! I can tell you that you are an amazing photographer but I want to also thank you for the knowledge and experiences you've shared with us over this past year. I know I have definitely learned a great deal from you and that is priceless. I hope that 2009 brings you even more than 2008 did. Thanks Erin & Gracie - xoxo, Jennifer

Lynda - I just want to Wish you all the best for the New Year.. You truly are an inspiration.. Can't wait to see what you come up with in 2009. You Rock!.

Jill - so beautiful Erin! you are an inspiration! all the best for you in 2009.

Cheryle - I am sitting here, amazed, as always. You are an incredible photographer with the soul of a genuine dog lover - the perfect fit. I wish I could hug you, especially after this post, since you have single-handedly been the best inspiration I have found, looking to start my own pet photography business all the way across the country from you! Thank you for expressing your sentiments, since I feel as though I am following in your footsteps, years behind you. Wow. I cannot think of a word that adequately describes your work, stunning, incredible, gorgeous, soulful - they all start, but never finish. THANK YOU!

Kallie - I love it when my RSS reader pops up and "Erin Vey's Blog" has been updated. It is the cause of spontaneous laughter ... by myself (just like this slideshow). I love the life in the pictures. You can see the dog's personality, and the photographer's perspective/love of dogs in each picture. I especially love the image of the wolfhound(?) in the back of the old station-wagon, but I must say if there was an award for the cutest client, the Goldendoodle puppy would most definitely win it :)

Becky - Just STUNNING!! I really don't think i can pick a favorite photo, for they all are just amazing. I loved them in loving memory of ... Almost cried for i realized that today is seven months since my girl passed way. Wished you lived closer, you i would have hired you to take her last shots. Thanks for doing to work you do. May you have a wonderful new year.

kristie kulik - Gorgeous! it is so very obvious looking at your shots that they are so much more than just photographs...you can SEE that these images were shot from the heart, which is why so many of us want to be like you when we grow up ;) It is hard to pick a fave as they all rock, but I have always had a soft spot for the pug on the orange couch, and the bulldogs.

Karen McKiernan - Erin - beautifully done - love the memory section the best. See Ya Soon.

Nicole - I've always loved the pup in the back of the station wagon. A favorite for sure!

Jen Kohler - oh erin, these are all so fabulous!!!! happy new year!

Alisha Robertson - So many favorites, but I love Baby in the road. Just stunning. Oh and the bulldog. :)

Alicia - I don't even know how one could pick a favorite! My heart lurched at the end - my boys are part of my family and wish they could be with me forever. What kind of book are you printing? Hope you'll share the final product and find a publisher!!! Who wouldn't purchase this =)

Megan - These are beautiful. I am a dog lover who is learning my SLR... and you are inspiring!

Andrea - Erin, As an aspiring photography, I read all kinds of photography blogs -- weddings, children, etc. I've been following yours for a few short weeks and your work alone brings all kind of emotion out of me. In short...you are amazing. This slidehow is priceless. I hope no one peeks over my cubicle, otherwise they will see my crying! Here's to a fabulous 2009 for you!!

Billie - oh.my.god. Major water works going here. Great slide show. You can really tell you love what you do in the emotion you capture with your photos. I don't know that there is any one favorite, but there were a couple that really caught my attention and either made me laugh out loud, or catch my breath. The black and white bulldog series with the dog on the right (Brodie maybe?) that's got their eyes cut back to the side looking at something, your pictures of Riley because I remember when you told us he'd passed and for some reason that really hit me, and the basset hound with his paw in the air (sooo cute!). Phenomenal Erin. You really are good at what you do. Congratulations.

andrea - your slide show made my heart melt, especially the "in loving memory" section . . . FIGHT THE TEARS, FIGHT EM!! you make it impossible to choose only one favorite, i wont do it!

Dennis Bullock - It is wonderful Erin! I think the memorial at the end is very classy. Good work!
