Dog Photographer Erin Vey bio picture

Meet Erin Vey

I am a dog lover first.

A photographer second.

By some random chance of fate, I was able to combine the two loves into the coolest job ever: A Dog Photographer

I grew up in a family where dogs were always an integral part of our lives and most importantly, members of the family. Most of my childhood was spent with various Basset Hounds of the lovable but extremely stubborn variety. We never had less than 2 at any given time, sometimes 3, and the occasional stray that one of us would bring home for a visit.

After a short stint doing portrait work, which I still love, I realized my true calling is capturing the essence and personality of dogs. Upon reflection, I feel that my time doing portrait work was not wasted. Because of it, my experience with portrait work flows beautifully into working with people and their dogs.

My husband and I are owned by the fabulous Miss Gracie, a 5 year old Great Dane who brings energy and life into our house. You’ll see her around here a lot, she loves having her portrait taken (at least I like to think so).  She is a complete Diva and if you stick around long enough, you'll know what I'm talking about!

What an amazing adventure this has been so far. I’m so glad you are here experiencing it with me.

Loves Dad

I find it fascinating how dogs have different relationships with different members of the family.

Gracie L-O-V-E-S her Daddy. The minute he gets home from work she races to the toy basket to present him with Ozzie, Shelly, or Johnson. All toys that we have named over time.

Tangent: Am I the only one that has names for all the toys? I can’t help it. Her first toy was Monkey and I really had a special fondness for Blue Cow, who we found on the street during one of our walks. The smaller the toy the better so she can hide it in her mouth so that no one sees it. I love that girl.

Anyways, it takes a lot to get my better half in front of the camera, but I begged and pleaded for a little modeling while I was renting the lights. We tried to get Gracie to sit like a nice girl but she wasn’t having any of it. So although you probably didn’t notice it at first, you have to appreciate the death grip he has on her chest. She took advantage of the moment to give Dad a big stinky kiss. We love her.

tracylynnt - Oh Erin, you are not the only one who names toys, believe me. The photo is absolutely wonderful. I am curious too about your light setup for studio shots?

claire - i think my favorite part of this photo is the fact that you can see the edges of the backdrop behind them... that little imperfection makes it so much more REAL, and therefore so much more perfect in an ironic sort of way. ...and the little kiss for her daddy is pretty cute too ;)

Melissa - This is such a great photo!

Amy - I laughed out loud when you said you name your toys, because I just pulled "Mr. Bear" out of the washing machine! Our dane, Bristol, loves that bear... we joke that its like her "Busy Bee" from Best in Show :)

Nicole - No names for our toys... only because they don't last long enough to get named. My dogs are noted toy destroyers.

Jennie Sloan - Erin I am in LOVE with your work. I am working on developing my own style right now, and and currently lean more towards studio. This shot is AWESOME. What kind of equipment are you using right now? And camera if you don't mind me asking? Gracie is wonderful. My chocolate lab, Bear, also sits for his "portrait sessions", sometimes for an hour at a time, for nothing more than a few nice treats. Isn't it wonderful how they help us practice? Unfortunatly my fiance is not so cooperative :) We also don't name toys, because their usually destroyed too fast

cortney - Awe how cute!! Miss G looks sooo little in that pic! just precious

Wendy - All our toys have names too! She'll even search the house for the one we've asked for. I love the look in Gracie's eyes as she looks up at her daddy.

Sheri V - oh yes ! ... and i nearly cried when a friends dog tore duckie apart ... awww duckie RIP hon ...

Jennifer - Of course you name the toys! Ours are Sullie, Mike, Belew (yep, they're the stuffed movie characters), blue puppy, "duck, duck, goose" and tumbler. I'm glad someone else's other half hates to be in front of the lens. :)

Gari-Ann - Our very first dog Booger (who passed away 4-1/2 yrs ago) had a stuffed Lamb Chop toy. You know, the puppet Lamb Chop? So from then on, every toy he had was Lamb Chop, whether it was actually the Lamb Chop toy, or a ball, a chewie, etc. ha! I haven't thought about that in a long time. :)

teresa - I don't know who's more adorable in this one, gracie or the hubster??!! :)

Jen VanSuydam - Awwh. This is the best.

Jill - beautiful! i love the look she's giving him.

Dawn - This is so perfect. The lighting is great. What's the verdict?

Cindy M - She has daddies eyes, love it!

sabrina - lovely ;)

Deann B. - I adore this picture! Love the backstory too...
